Realm Runners
THE BACKERKIT CAMPAIGN COMMERCIAL
We wanted to create a sort of lore style video that takes you through the world of Realm Runners. For the aesthetic, we landed on making something that was both sci-fi and medieval. Skinner plays a wizard that is walking you through the storyline of the game. Using the artwork he did for realms and cards, I brought the characters and environments to life with motion graphics. For the photos, Dora Tsui shot these on a textured black background with iridescent rocks and gravel to create a galactic look.
BACKGROUND
Realm Runners is a board game born from the collaboration of Bay Area artist, Skinner, and game designer, Jason Furie. To obtain the funds necessary for the games production, the duo decided to use BackerKit to crowdfund the project. Skinner and Jason reached out to my partner Dora Tsui and I to work on the creative assets for their BackerKit campaign page as well as social media ads. This required us to make photo and video assets. For video, we created three different assets; a campaign page commercial, how-to-play video, and a laid back unboxing video.
HOW TO PLAY VIDEO
The goal of this video was to give the audience a taste of what playing the game is like. This video aimed to showcase the objective of the game and the basics of how it’s played. We wanted to go for a natural look with this one since the purpose was more instructional than trying to immerse you in the actual world of the game. For photos Dora brought in Skinner to play a few rounds of the game to capture some stills of what gameplay looks like.
UNBOXING REALM RUNNERS
This purpose of this video was to showcase the personalities behind the game. Jason and Skinner open a fresh prototype of the game and discuss the lore, what’s included, and give a bit of backstory into what went into making the game. The look of this was meant to be a little less polished and more off the cuff since it’s a reaction style video.
THE RESULTS
After the final delivery of the assets, we waited patiently to see how the campaign would go. Once the campaign was published with all of our photos and videos, it reached it’s funding of $50,000 after only 8 hours! The BackerKit campaign continued on for another month. When it finally ended, the funds reached were quadruple the initial goal.
